Breaking down barriers to effective team diversity
What are the barriers to forming an effective team? We know there are barriers to developing cohesive groups. Humans - after all - are wired to be tribal. We seek out those similar to ourselves and find it hard to trust ‘outsiders’
We’ve been investigating the challenges and benefits of breaking barriers down in teams and we’ve learned a lot about what the barriers might be and how best to break them down. Potential barriers include location and competence but three important ones that relate to team diversity include
Demographic barriers where members have different gender, race, age or sexual orientation.
Cognitive barriers caused by differences in the way team members think and behave.

How you can support Berber communities this Christmas
One of my favourite moments of the year is planning a December visit to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. I love to see the young women and men in our craft centres, patiently creating beautifully handcrafted products
From knitted slippers and fluffy bathmats, to colourful woven rugs and wooden Christmas trees carved using reclaimed wood from the valley, each item is a one-off and I always leave with a suitcase filled to the brim, feeling enthused by these precious Berber communities.
Adding a handmade touch at Christmas time creates a particular magic and ornaments can be passed down through families for generations. I have always thought it wonderful to make something that can be used year after year.
Of course, finding the time to do it is another story, and so what better…
Ex-offenders need second chances not snubs
Ever since I visited Port Phillip Prison’s Youth Unit in Victoria 11 years ago, I have been passionate about supporting ex-offenders. To see smart, talented people languishing behind bars is saddening. But to see them snubbed and shunned when they leave prison is shameful. We need to support ex-offenders to become productive members of society and stop the terrible cycle of recidivism. Virgin Unite has long been an advocate of Port Phillip Prison’s Youth Unit, but we know more need to be done. While I was in Melbourne I enjoyed a fascinating working lunch generously hosted at Press Club Projects with Igniting Change and a group of business leaders and philanthropists
